Equine piroplasmosis, caused by Babesia caballi and Theileria equi, is a tick-borne parasitic disease widely distributed in tropical, subtropical, and Mediterranean regions. It represents a significant health constraint in equids, mainly due to the persistence of subclinical infections. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of equine piroplasmosis in the Tiaret region (Algeria) and to detect its causative agents using the MayGrünwald Giemsa (MGG) staining technique. A total of 59 horses were clinically examined, and blood samples were collected from the jugular vein. Blood smears were prepared and examined under light microscopy. The results showed no positive cases of equine piroplasmosis, either clinically or microscopically. These findings suggest a lack of microscopic detection of hemoparasites in the studied population at the time of sampling. However, given the limited sensitivity of microscopy and the possibility of subclinical infections, further investigations using serological and/or molecular techniques are recommended. (1)
